Kenya

In November of 2006, The Presbyterian Church of White Plains sent a team of more than 20 people to Kenya on a “mission” trip.

We were hosted by Wangari Mathai (Nobel Peace Laureate) and her Green Belt Movement (a non-profit organization focused on environmental concerns and women’s empowerment).

While in Kenya, we visited the Kibera slum (the largest slum in Africa) and in particular 2 Early Childhood Development Centers (ECDC). The first center, known as the Kibera YMCA, serves approximately 120 children; while the second center, called Drug Fighters, is serving more than 180 kids.

Our visit to these 2 schools was life changing, and inspired a fundraising campaign and return trip to the slum. From July 8-15, 2007, a team of 18 individuals was on site at the Kibera YMCA and Drug Fighters. At the YMCA, we began construction on a building that will house 2 new classrooms; and at Drug Fighters, we began a re-building project (since the original building burned about a year ago).
