Nicaragua

The Presbyterian Church of White Plains (WPPC) went on its first “mission” trip to Nicaragua in January 2000. Almost every year since then, teams have traveled to various Nicaraguan destinations to assist with needed building projects.

Between 2000-2004, our efforts were focused on the construction of a Community/Youth Center in the town of Puerto Cabezas in northeastern Nicaragua. This large collaborative undertaking involved The Presbytery of Hudson River (and many of its churches), The Moravian Church of Nicaragua, and Bridges to Community Inc. (a non-profit doing widespread community development work in Nicaragua).

Following the completion of the Community Center, WPPC worked with Bridges to Community to identify other projects. In 2005, a team went to the town of Masaya and worked alongside 2 families to construct new homes.

From June 30-July 8, 2007, a team of 12 church members were back in Nicaragua in the town of Ticuantepe. While on site, they built a new home for a family that had been living in a shack. The team included: Amy and Rebecca Via, Michael and Valerie Harden, Deirdre Lewin, Karen Armstrong, Yasmin Barnes, Lasheila Brown, Will Smith, and Julia, Isabelle and Jack Shaida.
